Abstract

Some sun exposure is beneficial to health; for example, by helping the body to produce vitamin D, which is essential for healthy bones. However, excessive sun exposure can lead to sunburn in the short-term and to melanoma and other skin cancers in the long-term. Australia has one of the highest rates of melanoma in the world, and the incidence of new cases of melanoma continues to rise.
